Round 2 of the 77th Masters is set for Friday with Sergio Garcia and Marc Leishman beginning the day atop the leaderboard at minus 6.
Garcia whose best finish ever at the Masters was fourth place in 2004 played a bogey free round on Thursday with three birdies on each side. Leishman who failed to make the cut in his only other Masters appearance in 2010 shot a five under 31 on the back nine in the first round including a run of four straight birdies on holes 13 16. Garcia is scheduled to tee off this morning at 9 34 a.m. while Leishman is to begin his round at 12 35 p.m.
Tiger Woods attempting to win a fifth Green Jacket shot an opening round score of two under which has him tied with10 other players for 13th place. Woods Thursday score of 70 has been a lucky number for him in the past as three of his titles were won after he posted that number in the first round. Woods will tee off at 1 41 p.m.
One of the more remarkable stories from the first round was the performance of 14 year old amateur Tianlang Guan of China. The youngest player to ever compete in the Masters Guan had four birdies to offset five bogies. Asked if he felt he had a chance to make the cut Guan answered I will be relaxed try to relax and focus on my game. Hopefully I can hit a couple good shots and I will see how things go.
There was some rain overnight in Augusta which will keep the greens soft. Three time Masters champion Phil Mickelson who shot one under commented that the greens were so receptive that players were able to shoot for pins that are not normally accessible.
They re soft and they are slow Mickelson said of the normally lightning quick Augusta National greens. And consequently we have 45 people at par or better. But that means that I ve got to change my whole mindset and just get after these pins because the ball s not running like it used to and I m giving this course way too much respect because of my past knowledge than the way I should be playing it today.
According to Weather.com no more rain is expected and temperatures are supposed to reach the mid 70s.
